A True Fish Story

FEW PEOPLE KNEW OF THE TERRIFIC FISHING IN THE UPPER DEERFIELD RIVER….UNTIL NOW!!

By Jim Knabe

The March issues of Fly Fisherman Magazine, and Fly Fish America just rated our local river and its streams one of the best in all of New England.  What made the change here is the new federal licensing agreement for the three hydroelectric dams in the area.  That new agreement requires constant water flows year round, where none existed before.  The result has been 58-degree water even in the hottest months of the summer, abundant insect activity, and huge trout.  Rainbows, browns, brookies, and land locked salmon are prolific.

Last summer our local Orvis dealer at Taddingers retail store, guided two avid fly fishermen from Pennsylvania, who have fished almost every stream in the east.  They had heard of the new birth of the upper Deerfield and wanted a try.  Within the first two hours they were surrounded, one catching and releasing 32 fish, and the other 25.  To their surprise many were salmon, and most of the fish ranged from 16 to 23 inches.

The major key to the area is knowing where to fish this 17-mile watershed, and at least in fly-fishing, knowing the insect hatches.  Information can be gotten right in the area at Taddinger's.  Spin casting can also be used, but either way, wading is a must, and so are waders.  The water is coooold!  With the three reservoirs feeding the streams, boat fishing is also a way to go, and boats can be rented in the area at several locations.  In the lakes, bass, lake trout, pickerel, and pike also thrive.  Or, if one wants, just dunk a worm off the banks.

Besides the great fishing, water recreation on the area’s three lakes is extensive for the whole family.  Jet skis, powerboats, canoes, and rowboats can also be rented.  A party boat cruises the lake, and several beaches line its coast for people to enjoy.  Several islands exist on lakes Whitingham and Somerset for exploring and make a great place for a picnic.
